2003
again saw Nuwarra enter a Junior and Senior League team in the District
Rugby League Knockout. These competitions are open to all schools, public
and private. It was always going to be a difficult assignment having
played no games and with just one training session.
However, the juniors who went in to have fun and to learn something
about playing league turned in a memorable performance. After being
down 13-0 in their semi-final, they stormed home to win 19-13. Unfortunately
they were defeated in the final by St Christophers. Nevertheless it
was a terrific effort, especially considering it was an under 10 competition
and seven of our players were 8 & 9 years of age. Added to that
5 of our players were playing their first ever game of league. Michael
deserves special mention for his efforts on the day. Well done everyone!

Coach – Mr Corkin.

Marcus, Reggie, Sarah(absent).
Our senior
side was attempting to win this competition for the 5th consecutive
year. They progressed well through the early rounds, winning comfortably.
In the semi-final we played a very strong Clempton Park side and were
able to progress through to the final courtesy of a hard fought, narrow
7-5 victory. In the final we met Panania who had already completed and
won their P.S.S.A. competition for 2003. Things did not start well for
Nuwarra who were unable to secure possession for much of the first half
and found themselves down 17 – 0 by half time. The second half
showed what tremendous spirit and commitment Nuwarra possess. With a
good share of possession we reduced the deficit to 17 –14. At
a time when the team was exhausted after a long hard day, they refused
to surrender. Unfortunately time ran out. Though the boys were disappointed
with the ‘runners up’ pennant, they should have been very
proud of their efforts. Parents and coach were! Special mention to Rhys,
Robert and the mercurial Mark for his courage and inspirational performance.

Both the Junior and Senior teams had a great year, displaying good sportsmanship and steady improvement.
The Junior team made the semi-finals, only to lose to Glenwood Public School. They developed well as the season progressed, at one stage winning 7 games in a row. The seniors were unlucky to miss the semi-finals. They finished equal fourth with Wattle Grove, but missed the finals on a differential of 31 runs.

South Park, Chipping Norton Lakes was the venue for this year's Cross Country Carnival. A large squad represented Nuwarra at the Zone Carnival, with six of these competitors successfully reaching Regional level. Congratulations goes out to Georgiane, Rhys, Casey, Daniel, Mark and Michael.
On Monday 27th October, 2003 two teams (1 boys & 1 girls) of year 5 & 6 students competed in the Milo Cricket Cup at Australis Park, Wattle Grove.
Both teams played very well on the day and won their way through to the regional final held at Raby Sports Centre on Tuesday 2nd December. After a great effort on the part of both team, the boys came in 5th and the girls team achieved 4th. The students trained well and represented Nuwarra Public School with pride. We are hoping to participate again next year.
A special thank you to Mr Casey who assisted with training.

The Junior Newcombe Ball team has had an extremely successful year. At the start of Term 1 it was a very inexperienced team with 11 new members. However, they were enthusiastic, training hard, and quickly learning the rules. When Term 4 started, three new players had to be found. Sarah, Tysonn and FJ easily filled the gaps. After dropping only 1 set in 18 matches, these boys and girls are very worthy champions.
Congratulations!
Best and Fairest: Tatjana

The Team:
Chryssie, Charlotte, Samantha, Samantha, Rocca, Lana, Rosalie, Mark, Brad,
Russell, Jaxon, Mitchell, Daniel.
What an outstanding team! To play 18 matches and not lose a set is quite an achievement – one not matched by any other Newcombe Ball team in the Liverpool Zone in the five years of the competition. Their commitment, enthusiasm and good sportsmanship was great to watch and they were fantastic role models for the junior team.
Congratulations on such a successful year!
Best and Fairest: Chryssie

The
league teams enjoyed yet another terrific year in 2003. Throughout the
season both teams developed tremendously through their commitment at
training and a willingness to listen and learn. Team spirit was always
positive and both teams showed ability to handle pressure situations
at various stages through the season.
Our seniors showed each week what a great team they were. Endowed with great skills and spirit they completed the competition rounds as undefeated minor premiers. Their semi final was against the strong Lurnea side and the winner of this semi would be hot favourites for the premiership. As was the case in the Knockout, Nuwarra got off to a slow start, finding themselves down 17 – 0. Not to be denied they fought back to level the scores at 17 –17 by half time. With Nuwarra full steam ahead we went to a lead of 22-17 before unforeseen circumstances saw a prolonged stoppage in play. Our momentum was halted and with the restart in play we again found ourselves behind 32-22. as always the team refused to give up but once again time ran out with us down 32-27. Regardless of this the boys were tremendous in defeat. They would have been most deserved premiers, but that’s football………… Thanks for the year boys!
The
juniors played well throughout the minor premiership but at times lacked
consistency, particularly when ‘sticking to the game plan’.
Though we finished 2nd after the preliminary rounds we had beaten the
minor premiers. Our only defeat coming in the game against Holsworthy
who had disposed of us in very convincing fashion. Our semi final victory
went as planned and we were ready for our grand final against minor
premiers Wattle Grove.
The
news that our opponents would be Holsworthy meant a serious re-think
if we were to reverse the result from our earlier encounter. To the
team’s credit they trained well to prepare themselves for what
was an exciting first grand final for many. We looked at what we needed
to do differently if we were to beat Holsworthy who I’m sure would
have been quietly confident after beating us by more than 20 points
in our previous encounter. Those who witnessed the game would have been
so very proud of the Nuwarra effort. Leading 5-0 at half time we stuck
rigidly to the game plan, with every player doing his or her job. Gradually
the pressure told on Holsworthy who became frustrated by their inability
to score. Reggie’s brilliant try on full time and Sarah’s
(I watch Hazem El-Masri) conversion saw us run out most worthy winners
27-0! Mark was a worthy recipient of ‘Best player, grand final’
but as a coach I think you all deserved the award. Thanks for a great
year.
Nuwarra fielded three
boys’ soccer teams in 2003. The boys enjoyed their season and played
well, displaying good sportsmanship throughout. The teams’ final
placings in the fourteen team fields were, Junior A (eighth), Junior B
(fifth) and Seniors (eleventh). We would like to thank Mr Williams and
Mr Zagoridis for help with coaching the teams and umpiring the games.
Nuwarra’s
Junior A and Senior A netball teams have had an exciting season. After
a slow start, due to games being cancelled because of rain in term two,
term three saw the players’ skills and teamwork improve, resulting
in some great games. Both the Junior and Senior A teams reached the semi-finals
and the Junior A team were victorious in the grand final against Glenwood.
Congratulations to both teams!
The Senior A’s:
Chryssie (our competent GA),
Emma (a great defensive player and rebounder),
Rosalie (our tenacious centre),
Bryce (our quick WA),
Rocca (our shooter and versatile player),
Kaylah (a new shooter?),
Nahla (a great team player),
Casey (uses her speed in centre),
Lana (great in defense and attack)
The Junior A’s:
Chevel (our dependable GD),
Jenna (able to play any position),
Kaajal (our unstoppable GK),
Jessica (great at intercepts),
Tatjana, Meaghan and Natalie (our shooting team),
Amna (enthusiastic in defense),
Matt (our specialist WD)
After an enjoyable season, we will miss our seniors in Year 6 that are leaving. Thank you to all the players for your effort and enthusiasm this year and to the parents for your support.
The
Senior B and Junior B netball teams experienced an enjoyable season of
playing winter P.S.S.A at Collimore Park. Although we weren’t successful
in reaching the finals, all the players improved their skills and tried
their very best. Unfortunately, the weather caused a few cancellations
and the disappointment of not playing netball on these days was evident.
The Senior
B team consisted of Colin ( Best and Fairest Award), Thomas (a great goalkeeper
who unfortunately broke his arm during the season), Brandon (keen to be
on the court all the time), Jason (a fast mover in defence), Jayde (most
improved player), Tegan (with her height she had to be goalkeeper), Mariam
(Coach’s Choice Award for her versatility), Kate (a great wing attack
willing to play centre when needed), Samantha (our very dependable goal
shooter), Kaylee (following on from her efforts of last year when she
helped us win the finals with her goal shooting skills) and Sheridan (who
always managed to enjoy herself on the court no matter the score).
The Junior
B team consisted of Nicole (an outstanding centre, always in the right
place), Toni (Best and Fairest Award), Kelly (who showed great improvement
towards the end of the season), Rachel (tried hard to position herself
in the goal circle to shoot goals), Lusar (played goalkeeper in her first
year of netball and tried hard), My (another versatile player who was
willing to give any position a try), Shannan (a great player who always
gave her best), Gabby (one of the keenest players around) and Joshua (team
manager, organizer and equipment carrier who also plays a mean defensive
game).
Congratulations
to all the players. I hope you enjoyed yourselves as much as I enjoyed
coaching you!
